About

In Japan, there are many subtle rules for gifting money. One of which is the use of the Fukusa, a piece of cloth to wrap and protect the envelope of money; Every detail matters: the design of the Fukusa, the direction of the wrapping and unwrapping, as well as the movement of the hands during the process of unwrapping and gifting the envelope. What makes the Fukusa unique is that it is owned by the gifter and is not given to the receiver in the process of gift-giving, making the act both personal and ceremonial.

This workshop explores the Fukusa as a starting point to think about wrapping as a form of self-expression. Participants design their own textile wrapping and experiment with gestures of giving and receiving.

What kind of textile wrapping would you design to express yourself as a gifter?

How would you choreograph the movements of wrapping and unwrapping to make the experience special?
